Title of Project: 30SS – Comorbidities in Anal Cancer: An Analysis of Electronic Medical Record from UAB Hospital
Project Description:

Anal cancer is rare in the general United States (US) population, with an estimate of 8,300 new diagnoses, 5,530 in women and 2,770 in men, reported in 2019. Lifetime risk of developing anal cancer is about 1 in 500, with a higher risk in women than men. However, the incidence of anal cancer has been increasing over recent years in some high-risk populations. Studies show that HPV infection is attributable to 90% of anal cancers, and oncogenic HPV types 16/18 are responsible for 92% of these HPV-associated anal cancer. There are 34 clinics and medical facilities in the Birmingham area that are networked to UAB hospital system and patient data are electronically centralized. We will review data from the UAB hospital comprehensive electronic medical record (EMR) data between 2012-2020 to identify all individuals with anal cancer and assess co-morbidities (specifically cardiovascular and neurological) associated with disease pathogenesis and treatment.
