for UAB, ACOM, USA, and Auburn Students
Each student must negotiate start and end dates for his or her CaRES project with the preceptor.
For summer 2021 students, the earliest possible start date is Monday, May 3; and the latest possible end date is Friday, August 27. Note that this is a span of 17 weeks, but the maximum duration of a CaRES internship allowable by NCI (our funding agency) is 15 weeks. Initially, no student will be funded for 15 weeks, but extensions of support for up to a total of 15 weeks may be possible if the student’s academic schedule and our budget allows.
The desired length of a CaRES internship is 10-12 weeks. The minimum duration of a CaRES internship is 8 consecutive weeks, for medical students and other students whose academic schedules allow only 8 weeks of discretionary time in the summer. A student who does not have at least 8 weeks available in the summer cannot participate in CaRES.
An occasional vacation day can be taken by notifying the preceptor in advance.
Each CaRES internship requires full-time effort. With permission of your preceptor you may take one classroom course, or online courses, while doing CaRES, if you can nevertheless contribute full-time effort to CaRES. You cannot be paid by CaRES while you are actively taking a full-time course load.
Please study the academic calendar from your university and degree program to determine which weeks in the period May 3 to August 27, 2021 you are available to do CaRES full-time. Here is a summary of the dates when our 2021 pools of eligible students are available, drawn from university websites:
UAB Public Health Students: May 3 to August 20
UAB MS1 Medical Students: June 7 to July 30
UAB Incoming Medical Students: May 3 to July 23
UAB Master of Biomedical Science Students: May 3 to August 27
ACOM Medical Students: June 1 to July 24
USA Medical Students: May 24 to July 30

If your program is not listed above, please email Ms. Judy Baker (janbaker@uab.edu) to confirm your available dates. Any CaRES student who believes that the dates indicated above do not apply to his or her situation should contact Ms. Baker to request and justify different start and end dates for their CaRES project. The CaRES award letter prepared by Ms. Baker will indicate the number of weeks that you will be paid, corresponding to your request but also considering your academic calendar. Thank you.
