CaRES Student Payment Plan

CaRES Student Work Schedule and Payment Plan

  • CaRES internships are for full-time effort, typically, 40 hours per week, monitored by each preceptor.
  • The daily work schedule (what time to “clock in” and what time to “clock out”) varies by the project and should be negotiated between student and preceptor.
  • Before accepting a CaRES Internship, the student should become clear about the expectations of the preceptor regarding his or her work schedule.  Should the same hours be kept each day, or will there be some “long days” and some “short days”?
  • A student should not agree to work on a project unless he / she can meet the demands of the project in terms of the number of weeks of effort and the intensity of effort needed.
  • Some projects proceed at a measured pace, with flexible work hours, while other projects move along quickly, with duties that must be accomplished in timely fashion each day.
  • The duration of CaRES internships is a minimum of 8 weeks and a maximum of 15 weeks, in the period May 3 – August 27, 2021.
  • Start and end dates for each project are to be negotiated between student and preceptor, considering the demands of the project and the availability of student and preceptor.
  • CaRES interns will be paid $600 per week worked.
  • The maximum pay for any CaRES project is $600/week * 15 weeks = $9000.
  • Pay-days for all bi-weekly UAB employees are made on the Fridays designated by UAB.  These pay dates are already established.
  • There is a lag of one week between work that you do and payment for that week.  You never get paid on a Friday for the work you did that week.
  • A student whose first work week ends on a Friday pay-day will not be paid anything that day. This student’s first pay check will be for two weeks of work and will come at the end of the third work week, because Friday of the second work week is not a pay-day.
  • A student whose second work week ends on a Friday pay-day will be paid for their first week on that day.  Payment for the second work week will be part of the next paycheck.
  • Any student who resigns from, or is dismissed from, his/her CaRESposition before the project has been completed, will be paid only for the weeks worked.  In this situation, transfer to another CaRES project for the remainder of the summer may be possible so that the student can earn all the money that he or she expected to earn.
  • Each CaRES intern and his or her preceptor should meet prior to the student’s first day of work to complete the Mentoring Contract, found on the CaRES website.
  • Completion of the Mentoring Contract will clarify the goals of the project so that the student will know how to spend his or her time, and what achievements are expected.
  • “Putting in the time” is important, but completing the project is more important!
  • If you have questions regarding your work schedule or the payment plan, please contact CaRES Program Director Dr. John Waterbor at h2obor@uab.edu, 205-934-7146.
