CEUs: The Deep South Center for OH&S is an approved provider of continuing education units for nurses by the AL Board of Nursing (Provider ABNP0420 Expiration Date 12/16/2026) and has awarded this program 4.8 ABN CEUs, 0.4 CEUs, and 4.0 SW CEUs. The Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators has reviewed and approved the following seminars for continuing education credit for licensed nursing home administrators in the State of Alabama for 3.5 hours.

Cost: Free, but seating is limited and registration is required. Seats are available on a first come first serve basis.

Broad Objectives

  • Describe the role of Infection Prevention and Control in Long-Term Care settings
  • Verbalize who should report, how to report, and when to report Reportable Diseases and Conditions.
  • Identify the role of preventing healthcare associated infections (HAIs) through environmental surface disinfection
  • Discuss impact of MDRO’s in Long-Term Care Nursing Facilities and how Enhanced Barrier Precautions can be implemented to decrease the spread of MDROs
  • Demonstrate how to use Glo-Germ in their facility.
  • Discuss the difference in Loeb and McGeer Criteria as they apply to surveillance in LTCF.
  • Identify the functions and responsibilities of the nurse/medication tech during medication pass as related to infection control procedures.

Course Description: This course is aimed towards infection prevention and control healthcare professionals in the Long-Term Care Facility setting, located in the North Alabama Region (includes the following Alabama counties at a minimum: Cullman, Blount, Walker, St. Clair, facilities in North Jefferson County, Winston, Morgan, Lawrence, Colbert, Limestone, Lauderdale, Franklin, Marshall, Madison, DeKalb, Jackson, Marion, Fayette and Etowah) The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare professionals in LTCFs with the knowledge and tools to run a competent and inclusive infection control program within their facility. The attendees will learn about the importance of reporting outbreaks to the ADPH, hand hygiene, environmental services, surveillance for infections as well as following infection prevention strategies while administering medications.  The attendees will also be provided with a better understanding of the General Infection Control Assessment Response and how this can benefit their facilities.
