Premier Research Interdisciplinary Mentored Education

KUH PRIME is an interdisciplinary initiative to bring together Kidney, Urology, and non-malignant Hematology researchers and scholars from across the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Tulane University (TU), and Augusta University (AU). KUH PRIME works to develop a fully integrated, interdisciplinary network of pre- and post-doctoral trainees in KUH research along with bringing together trainees at all levels and consolidating training activities between the UAB, TU, and AU training ecosystem.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship - Request for Application

NIH-funded training grant post-doctoral fellowships are available for research training in the areas broadly related to Kidney, Urology, and non-malignant Hematology diseases. Trainees will pursue a one to two year research program in the laboratory of an established basic or clinical research mentor, supplemented with training in advanced biostatistics and bioethics courses. Pre-Doctoral Fellowship - Request for Application

NIH-funded training grant pre-doctoral fellowships are available for research training in the areas of basic, clinical, translational, and epidemiological related to Kidney, Urology, and non-malignant Hematology diseases. Trainees will pursue up to two years of an independent research in the laboratory of an established research scientist, under direction of the graduate theme and faculty mentor at Augusta University (AU), Tulane University (TU) or The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). ESTEEM

ESTEEM Program: Selected faculty are referred to as ESTEEM faculty. The ESTEEM program has two goals.

  • Provide career coaching and professional development for ESTEEM faculty, specifically on hiring and managing lab personnel.
  • Provide funds (up to $16,000) towards the salary/fringe of a gap year intern for one year to work in the lab of the ESTEEM faculty member. Gap year interns are recent BA/BS graduates who have future aspirations to matriculate in graduate school or medical school. Gap year interns hired by ESTEEM faculty will be referred to as ESTEEM interns. The Professional Development Core also provides opportunities for professional development to ESTEEM interns.

KUH GRIT (Grant Writing Intensive)

The KUH GRIT program is a five month intensive, individualized, and KUH Cohort-based research training and grantsmanship program in the methodological and practical aspects of clinical and translational research studies. The goal is to prepare a career development grant. The curriculum and coaching are designed to improve the knowledge and skill set to design, conduct, and analyze clinical or translational research projects. These activities are designed to promote the retention of KUH early career investigators in academic medicine. All meetings are hybrid and require a three-hour weekly commitment (see sample curriculum). Currently Accepting Applications. Deadline: May 16, 2025.

Core Programs

The Administrative Core will be the center of the organizational structure & governance of KUH PRIME. It will leverage the collaborative spirit & established relationships between kidney, urology, & non-malignant hematology scientists to form a cohesive institutional training network.

The Training Core supports KUH PRIME trainees who represent a broad spectrum of scientific interests. We provide training in interdisciplinary & translational research that ensures pre- & post-doctoral trainees will learn the skills & knowledge to successfully transition to the next steps of their careers in KUH research.

The Professional Development Core’s main focus is to motivate & sustain the next generation of scientific leaders. We have created an immersive, individualized, interdisciplinary, and integrated core that provides personalized mentoring, inspirational career forums, research training institutes, & leadership development.

The Network Core’s overall goal is to provide KUH PRIME scholars strategies to help develop their networking & communication skills & apply them to a range of networking opportunities.
