Steve Mitchell is IN! This Blazer All-American’s jersey is retired in the rafters of Bartow Arena, and now he has a home in your new National Alumni Society as well. Steve uses the lessons he learned from Coach Gene Bartow as a student at UAB and passes that wisdom on to today’s youth as the athletic director at Altamont. As Blazers, we’ve always been proud of Steve – now we’re proud to have him as a part of our Alumni family, 150,000 strong.
Alice Laurendine is IN! Alice earned her Master of Education from UAB in 1979 and went on to serve as the principal of Vestavia Hills High School for many years. She now volunteers at Samford University Hope Foundation for Character Education and serves on the Samford Board of Overseers.
Taril Slater is IN! He received his bachelor’s degree from the School of Education in 2010 and returned to UAB to earn his Master of Education in 2014.
Kim Bennett is IN! She earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and Master of Arts in Education from UAB! This mother of four is currently looking forward to her fifth year teaching high school math here in Alabama.
Carolyn Powell is IN! She obtained her Master of Arts in Education from UAB in 1972 and worked as a school counselor until 1998 when she retired from Etowah County Schools.
Jennifer Sloan is IN! She earned her right to walk across the stage and accept two degrees from UAB. Her first degree was a B.S. in secondary education/Spanish in 2009, and then she earned an M.A.E. in English as a Second Language in 2016.
Yvonne Howze is IN! Yvonne received a BA from Talladega College in 1973, a Masters in Education from UAB in 1975, and a Doctorate in Education from Vanderbilt University in 1990. Yvonne is President and Owner of CYA Consulting Group in Saint Augustine, Florida. CYA specializes in Executive Coaching, Leadership Development and Training, and Performance Excellence for small businesses, non-profits, and governmental agencies.
Darin Spease is IN! He graduated with an M.A.E. from the UAB School of Education in 1993. After graduation, he has worked as an assistant athletic director at UAB for seven years before becoming the deputy athletic director at UNC Charlotte, where he currently is today.
Judy Hinton is IN! She earned her first degree in education in 1975 and her second in 1998. Emily then took her B.S. and MAE degrees from UAB and put them to work teaching the children of Alabama. She will start her 44th year in teaching this school year.
