This is an opportunity for first-generation students from an URM to join Tulane Urology for two months via the PIPE program, which is designed to integrate participants into ongoing laboratory and clinical research projects, therefore introducing participants to methods of research, providing participants with hands-on laboratory training, and familiarizing participants with the essential aspects of scientific writing, among other program components. In addition, this program will foster personal and professional development, provide career guidance, and demystify the application steps of admission to a medical school, be it Tulane University School of Medicine or elsewhere.

The mission of the STAR program (Student  Training  AndResearch) is to serve as a recruiting mechanism and provide outstanding, hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a research PhD degree in biomedical sciences, nursingor biostatistics at Augusta University. STAR participants engage in research in a supportive environment under the guidance of an Augusta University faculty member and their research team. This level of experiential training provides participants with excellent preparation, relevant knowledge, and practical skills needed to pursue a research career.

This is an 8-10 week mentored research experience for medical students during the summer between the first and second year of medical school.  Funding for this program was made possible by a U54 grant (DK 137307) from NIDDK to the UAB- UCSD O’Brien Center and supplemented by institutional support.
