Quarterly TL1 Highlights

TL1 Scholars have been hard at work over the past few months, achieving publications, earning awards, and more! Below are a few recent highlights.

Andrew Barbera, MD, UAB

This quarter, Dr. Barbera received the Dixon Pediatric Fellowship Award and published an article: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00467-025-06931-x

Gillian Kelly, UAB

Gillian was awarded an OKRA travel award this quarter to attend the AHA Hypertension conference.

Abby Brooks, UAB

Abby Brooks recently published a review in the American Journal of Physiology: Renal Physiology titled “Endothelin-1 signaling in the kidney: recent advances and remaining gaps.” Read her review here: https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/ajprenal.00304.2024

Tha Luong, UAB

Tha Luong received an award from the ET-19 conference: Young Investigator Travel Award and an Oral Presentation.

Maria Venegas, PhD, UAB

Dr. Maria Venegas received the Best Trainee Presentation Award by the Canadian Journal of Physiology at the 19th International Conference on Endothelin Conference in Charleston, SC.

Samuel Walton, PhD, Augusta University

Dr. Sam Walton published a manuscript in Hypertension “Walton SD, Dasinger JH, Burns-Ray EC, Baldwin KE, Cherian-Shaw M, Abais-Battad JM, Mattson DL. Exacerbation of Dahl SS Hypertension and Renal Damage by NOX2 in CD4+ T cells. Hypertension. In print. ” He also received a TAC Poster Award while attending the Hypertension Conference 2025. 

Hiruni Aponso, UAB

Hiruni received the 2025 Hypertension New Investigator Travel Award at the AHA Hypertension meeting this fall.
