This work brings together efforts for MD and PhD scholars, in an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional effort. Dr. J. Miller Allan is an MD graduate of the Heersink School of Medicine 2023 class. He is currently a Resident at Emory University. Dr. Allan started his work as a gap year intern through the GAIN program working with Dr. Jennifer Pollock. He later joined the inaugural class of the UAB PROmoTE program (recently renewed) which brings together entering MD and PhD scholars in a unique team science research experience. He continued research throughout medical school and completed a short term post-doc with this research team that spans across the section of Cardio-Renal Physiology in the Division of Nephrology and collaborates with the Center for Blood Disorders at Augusta University. This work is a pivotal effort to further understand mechanisms affecting vasoconstriction in Sickle Cell Disease.
This work also shows the collaborative interdisciplinary opportunities to impact the future of research through the Deep South KUH PRIME which brings together kidney, urology, and non-malignant hematology researchers from Augusta University, Tulane University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This is an NIH U2C/TL1 funded initiative awarded in 2023.
