Elizabeth Beierle, M.D.

Dr. Beierle received her undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1989. She completed a general surgery internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and subsequently completed her surgical residency at the University of Florida in 1996. She completed her pediatric surgery fellowship training in Philadelphia at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in 1998. Dr. Beierle came to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2009, after spending over nine years on the faculty at the University of Florida. She specializes in the surgical care of children and neonates with a special emphasis upon pediatric surgical oncology. She has an active basic science research laboratory that focuses on novel therapeutics for pediatric solid tumors. She has mentored a number of undergraduate students, medical students, residents and graduate students in her lab.

Jerry Stewart, B.S.

Jerry Stewart started his career in protein crystallography before transitioning into cancer research. After spending 12 years in neuropathology studying glioblastoma tumors, he joined Dr. Beierle’s lab in 2009 as our lab manager. He has since been studying pediatric solid tumors. As a native of Birmingham, he graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

Jamie Aye, M.D.

Dr. Jamie Aye is a pediatric hematology-oncology attending at Children’s of Alabama, where she is currently the director of the patient-derived xenograft program. She graduated from Wake Forest University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Science. She continued her studies at Mercer University School of Medicine, where she completed her M.D. in 2012. She completed her Pediatrics residency at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina in 2015, and her hematology-oncology fellowship here at UAB in 2018.

Raoud Marayati, M.D.

Raoud completed medical school at the University of Aleppo Faculty of Medicine. She is currently a UAB general surgery resident who has completed 2 clinical years of residency and is pursuing her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology during her research years in the lab. Raoud is funded through an NIH T-32 training grant and by the Society of University Surgeons.

Laura Bownes, M.D.

Laura is a UAB general surgery resident who has completed two clinical years and is in her second of three years in the Beierle Lab. She graduated from Sewanee with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and attended UAB for medical school. She plans to apply for a pediatric surgery fellowship in the future.

Sara Claire Hutchins, M.D.

Sara Claire is a second year Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellow at UAB. She graduated medical school from the University of Mississippi and continued here for her pediatric residency. Sara Claire has a special interest in solid tumors and looks to find novel ways at targeting osteosarcoma.

Colin Quinn

Colin is a graduate of The Ohio State University, originally from Massachusetts, who is currently a first-year graduate student in the UAB Medical Scientist Training Program. He is working in the Beierle lab in order to learn the skills he needs to become an outstanding physician-scientist and has a passion for making progress in the fight against pediatric cancer.
