Dr. Bayley Jones Wins First Place at the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society in Lisbon, Portugal

Dr. Jones was recognized at the 9th Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society World Congress for her abstract focusing on identifying downstream components of enhanced recovery that are associated with receiving preoperative education. This research will be aid in refocusing education efforts to improve the quality of preoperative education for patients, especially within vulnerable patient populations. Burke Smith Receives ACS Resident Research Scholarship

Dr. Burke Smith is a PGY2 resident in the Department of Surgery who will be joining our colorectal lab team at the start of 2022. Recently, he was one of six residents selected by the American College of Surgeons for a Resident Research Scholarship Award for 2022-2024. We are beyond proud of the tenacity and dedication of the members of our lab team and excited to see his contributions to the field.

“It is truly an honor to be one of only six trainees selected for this prestigious research award in academic surgery,” said Smith. “I look forward to representing the Department of Surgery through excellent research, dedication and innovation.”

ACS Press Release with Dr. Chu and Dr. Theiss

Dr. Chu and Dr. Theiss participated in a virtual press conference hosted by the American College of Surgeons to present new findings on the impact of low health literacy on surgical patient outcomes. Using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NISQIP) along with medical records, they were able to see patient compliance rates with UAB’s Enhanced Recovery Program (ERP). At UAB, we take great pride in creating open and safe environments for all trainees and faculty to thrive, thanks to the visionary leadership of Drs. Britney Corey, Graeme McFarland, Sara Pereira, Colin Martin and Herb Chen,” said Shao. “The opportunity to attend this conference and further connect with leaders who are also in this space allows for collaborative discussions to continue across the institutions as well. Stressing the Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening Following Death of Chadwick Boseman

“There just has to be a higher index of suspicion for something like colorectal cancer” – Dr. Chu

After a four year battle with colorectal cancer, Chadwick Boseman passed away at the young age of 43. Our primary investigator, Dr. Daniel Chu, was featured on CBS 42 following his tragic death to bring awareness to the importance of colorectal screenings with an emphasis of early screening.
