Dr. Jones was recognized at the 9th Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society World Congress for her abstract focusing on identifying downstream components of enhanced recovery that are associated with receiving preoperative education. This research will be aid in refocusing education efforts to improve the quality of preoperative education for patients, especially within vulnerable patient populations. Dr. Burke Smith is a PGY2 resident in the Department of Surgery who will be joining our colorectal lab team at the start of 2022. Recently, he was one of six residents selected by the American College of Surgeons for a Resident Research Scholarship Award for 2022-2024. We are beyond proud of the tenacity and dedication of the members of our lab team and excited to see his contributions to the field.
“It is truly an honor to be one of only six trainees selected for this prestigious research award in academic surgery,” said Smith. “I look forward to representing the Department of Surgery through excellent research, dedication and innovation.”

Dr. Chu and Dr. Theiss participated in a virtual press conference hosted by the American College of Surgeons to present new findings on the impact of low health literacy on surgical patient outcomes. Using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NISQIP) along with medical records, they were able to see patient compliance rates with UAB’s Enhanced Recovery Program (ERP).
