About the Study
Global Leader 10 Years In a Row
Since 2013, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in collaboration with the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) have been a part of the longest longitudinal Women HIV cohort study (i.e. Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) cohort). As of April 1, 2019, the WIHS cohort combined with the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) to create the MACS/ WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). The MWCCS is a collaborative research effort that aims to understand and reduce the impact of chronic health conditions—including heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) disorders—that affect people living with HIV and those at risk of acquiring HIV.
Participants
Study participants will be followed at annual study visits where data on multiple physical, biological and psychosocial variables will be gathered. The research team expects important science to be generated to improve the lives of women and men and living with HIV and those at risk for HIV infection, and to expand knowledge related to HIV prevention and treatment.
Community Advisory Board

Each study participant has an opportunity to become a member of the MWCCS National Community Advisory Board (NCAB). The NCAB provides a place for participants to provide feedback regarding study procedures, to support and encourage involvement of participants, to advocate for research funding and to translate MWCCS findings to the community. As we move forward to advance HIV research, we must ensure that the women and men of MWCCS are heard and represented.
Investigators
The MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS) welcomes collaborations with investigators and with other cohorts, both nationally and internationally. These joint efforts have yielded a multitude of publications of high scientific merit.
The Study of Treatment and Reproductive Health in Women
Global Leader 10 Years In a Row
The Study of Treatment and Reproductive Health in Women (STAR) cohort seeks to answer questions related to the effects of HIV infection and HIV-related medical conditions in women of reproductive age. The study will enroll 2,000 women living with HIV or at risk of HIV infection in the Southeast region of the United States.
