Health and Policy Conference Travel Scholarship
The mission of the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy (LHC) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is to connect and support those seeking to improve health outcomes through policy. In support of this mission, we aim to enhance educational opportunities for students and empower them to affect policy change. The purpose of the Health and Policy Conference Scholarship is to assist UAB students with conference registration fees and travel costs for national conferences related to the role of public policy in population health.
Each fiscal year, the LHC will dedicate up to $3,000 to this program. Applications for access to these funds (see below for acceptable uses) will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Upon reviewing the criteria below, interested students are encouraged to submit an application to lhc@uab.edu.

Eligibility Criteria:
All UAB students – undergraduate, graduate, and professional – are eligible. The conference for which the student is travelling must include a focus on both population health and public policy. While funding is available on a first-come-first-served basis, priority will be given to applicants that demonstrate a close relevance to the LHC’s annual Spotlight. Individuals are eligible for one award per fiscal year.
Process:
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. While funding lasts, applications will be reviewed in the order that they are received. To submit an application, email a PDF document to the lhc@uab.edu containing the following information:
- Conference Information: title, hosting organization, description
- Justification: Why do you plan to attend this conference?
- Budget: registration fee, lodging expenses, travel expenses, other sources of funding; Include a specific dollar amount requested from the scholarship.
Application Review:
Applications are reviewed by LHC staff on a rolling basis for alignment with the LHC’s mission, programs, and activities, as well as appropriateness of the budget and justification. Applicants will receive requests for additional information and/or a decision by email within two weeks of application.
Award Details
The LHC can pay for conference registration directly. Other funding will be disbursed a scholarship to the student. As such, funding will automatically apply to any outstanding balance in the student account.
Students who receive funding from the LHC are expected to submit a written reflection after the conference. Detailed instructions will be provided with the receipt of award.
