Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama

Scope-of-practice regulations limit the ability of nurse practitioners in Alabama to meet the needs of their patients. This team is exploring the implications of these limitations and evaluating potential solutions.

Greater-Birmingham Alliance to Stop Pollution

Through several years of community engagement, GASP has identified broad support for municipal initiative to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change on Birmingham residents. This team is exploring potential actions that the City of Birmingham could take to protect its residents.

Cahaba River Society

Stormwater runoff is a persistent threat to the Cahaba River. This team is exploring options for local municipalities to protect the watershed through the incentivization of low-impact development practices.

Arts Collab

Access to quality arts education remains inconsistent across the Greater Birmingham area. This team is exploring policy solutions to this issue.

Students

Kennedy Butler

I received my undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in Biological Sciences and I am now a graduate student at UAB studying Multidisciplinary Biomedical Sciences. My research focuses on preventative medicine and the systematic policies that influence healthcare.

Shree Delwadia

Shree Delwadia is a junior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, studying Biomedical Sciences on the pre-med track. As a Health Policy Ambassador, she strives to broaden her knowledge about healthcare disparities, health policies, and advocacy for underserved populations. She hopes to learn more about the Birmingham community through this program, in order to work towards positive change within the city.

Maizonne Fields

Maizonne is a fourth year PhD student in the Applied Developmental Psychology Program and is enrolled in the Public Health Certificate. Her research uses the Stress Process Model to investigate how varying factors (culture, religion, neighborhood cohesion, and other neighborhood effects) affect the caregiving experience for those caring for an older adult. She plans to pursue a career that uses research and policy change as a way to address health disparities.

Ramsey Haggerty

Ramsey, a Master of Public Administration and Global Health Student, graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University in 2023. He is a member of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the Global Health Interest Group (GHIG). Ramsey has also served as a District Intern with Congresswoman Terri Sewell and as a Public Policy intern with the Alzheimer’s Association- with which he is still active as an Alzheimer’s Congressional Team Member and State Champion Advocate.

Parker Henson

Parker Henson is a Senior at UAB Majoring in Public Health with a concentration in Environmental Health and a Minor in Community Health . After her Bachelor’s, she plans on pursuing her Master of Public Health in Environmental Health. She hopes to one day work with freshwater conservation efforts, environmental policy, and advocacy. She also hopes to help educate people on how environmental determinates affect a person’s health and wellbeing.

Saad Khan

Saad Khan is an undergraduate student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Neuroscience. He is passionate about advocacy, engagement, and representation both on-campus and off-campus. As a Health Policy Ambassador, he aims to connect with the local partners and utilize public policy to advocate for viable change in the community!

Wajiha Mekki

Wajiha Mekki is a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham studying Cancer Biology and Political Science while concurrently pursuing her Master’s in Public Health in Epidemiology. She is a servant leader, both on-campus and off-campus, having held leadership roles in numerous university organizations. She aspires to leverage her interdisciplinary interests and experiences to uplift the communities she will serve through interventional programs and policies in the future.

Nikhita Mudium

I am a senior majoring in Neuroscience while pursuing an MPH with a concentration in Health Policy and Organization. This is my second year as a Health Policy Ambassador!

Soundharya Ramanathan

Soundharya is a senior studying English and Psychology, with minors in Chemistry and Communications. Her interests include healthcare equity, educational reform, and social welfare. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, singing, working out, and binge-watching new shows!

Joey Travis

Joey Travis has served as a Nurse Practitioner in rural Alabama and a Nurse Educator at UAB Hospital. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Nursing Practice at the UAB School of Nursing.

Angel Varghese

Hi everyone! My name is Angel Varghese, and I am a junior in the University Honors Program (UHP) at UAB. I am studying Neuroscience and pursuing my MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology. I am interested in health equity, medicine, and advocacy to promote the well-being of our communities. I hope to be able to use my education and experiences to help bring change through public health policy and community initiatives now and in my future career.

Sarah Wilson

Sarah Wilson is a senior majoring in neuroscience with an MPH in Environmental Health. Her passions include sustainability and advocacy for underserved populations. She looks forward to building her policy skills and addressing public health challenges!
