Project Description: The Birmingham Policy Surveillance Initiative (PSI) tracks policies, programs, and initiatives enacted at the municipal level which affect public health. While much public health policy is enacted at the federal and state levels, cities play an important role in developing and implementing policies and programs that impact population health, but few systems exist to understand these practices across cities. This project helps to fill the knowledge gap. As more is understood and shared about policies and programs that can improve health, cities can take even greater strides in promoting health in their jurisdictions.

Internship Description: To assist with PSI activities, interns spend the semester monitoring two of our six categories and develop a policy brief, literature review, or other written product associated with these categories. Interns are expected to work 15 hours each week during the 10-week summer semester, starting June 6 and running through August 12. Interns will receive a $2,000 stipend split into two payments, one halfway through the semester and one upon completion.

Our Healthcare Communications Internship works to provide the training, resources, and experience for students to learn about healthcare communications in a hands-on environment.

Project Description: The Lister Hill Center for Health Policy works to seek out, analyze, and evaluate health policy initiatives at the state level and how they impact communities within Alabama. Through our primary publication, Policy Watch, our staff breaks down the background of specific pieces of legislation and provides an academic framework for how it could impact the health of various communities. Particular areas of interest for Policy Watch include the health impacts of prison reform, expansion of Medicaid, mental health resources, and nutrition.

Internship Description: To assist with Policy Watch and other aspects of the LHC operations, interns will spend the summer semester in an experiential learning environment conducting research on state policy initiatives. While much of the work will be independent, interns will receive training on writing, research, and organization. In addition, this internship offers an opportunity to assist with the outreach campaigns, Spotlight events, and the external communication strategies of the Center. Interns are expected to work up to 20 hours per week. This is a paid position with a starting salary of $12/hour.

Eligibility & Application: [Please note, applications are closed at this time!] The Healthcare Communications Internship is open to upper-class or graduate-level students. Applicants should have a background in public health, political science, or communications with a vested interest in policy. Applicants’ information will be collected through Google Forms and interviews will take place the week of March 7th.
