Aditi and Chandni Take the Top at the UAB Summer Expo!

Congratulations to Aditi Gurudutt and Chandni Bhat who placed 1st and 2nd at the 2023 Summer UAB Undergraduate Research Expo in the Physical and Applied Science category! Thank you, Aditi and Chandni, for doing a fantastic job representing the Burns Research Group!

The UAB Expo celebrates excellence in research, creative activity, and scholarship by showcasing the academic endeavors of undergraduate students.

Aditi is a participant in the Horizon-broadening Isotope Production Pipeline Opportunities (HIPPO) collaboration, which is sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Isotope Program.

Chandni is a participant in the UAB Regional Initiative to Promote Undergraduate Participation in Experimental and Computational Materials Research program, which is supported by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Our DOE ECRP Proposal was Selected!

Our project, Expanding the Fundamental Understanding of At-211 Chemistry: Towards Improving Binding and Complexation, has been selected for funding through the DOE Office of Science’s Early Career Research Program (ECRP) by the Office of Isotope R&D and Production and the DOE Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). The goal of this project is to expand the fundamental chemistry of At-211 binding and complexation, so insights gained can be applied to developments in separations, purifications, and chelating agents for this interesting and important element. Ultimately, an improved understanding of At-211 could significantly decrease the time required for the recovery and use of this TAT isotope, leading to an overall increase in the availability of At-211 for treatment as well as research purposes.

New Summer HIPPO Student!

The Burns Research Lab welcomes Ms. Aditi Gurudutt as a summer researcher. Aditi is a participant in the Horizon-broadening Isotope Production Pipeline Opportunities (HIPPO) collaboration, which is sponsored by the Department of Energy’s Isotope Program.

Ms. Gurudutt is a rising junior at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, working towards a degree in Chemical Engineering. The HIPPO program runs for 9 weeks from the first week in June till the first week of August and supports 13 undergraduate and 5 graduate students from around the country to conduct cutting-edge research across many different disciplines of isotope science.

UAB HIPPO Campus 2023

The UAB HIPPO Campus was held this week in a joint effort between the Lapi Lab and the Burns Lab. The UAB HIPPO Campus consisted of a week-long intensive, running from June 5th–9th, where 5 students from around the country came to UAB to be trained in nuclear science and radiochemistry, with a focus on isotope production at UAB.
