Dr. Prescott Atkinson MD, PhD, is a clinical consultant to the UAB Diagnostic Mycoplasma laboratory with expertise in pediatric infectious diseases and immunology. He is the Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Children’s of Alabama and a Professor of Pediatrics at UAB. He is board certified in pediatrics, as well as allergy and immunology. He received his MD/PhD from Emory University in 1987, completed his pediatric residency at Georgetown University and completed a fellowship in allergy and immunology in 1992 at the National Institutes of Health. He joined the UAB faculty in 1992. Dr. Atkinson is a key opinion leader in Mycoplasmology, author of over 70 research articles, and current President of the United States Organization for Mycoplasmology (USOM). Major ongoing research interests include the role of chronic mollicute infections in chronic diseases such as asthma and arthritis and in patients with primary immunodeficiencies.
