Postgraduate Research Fellow

Biography:

My name is Gianina C. Hernandez-Marquez, and I am very excited to be joining Dr. Chu’s lab for the next two years as a Postgraduate Research Fellow! I am originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico and I graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus with a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology. After this, I spent a year working as a research fellow in the Neurosurgery Department at Mount Sinai Hospital, specifically studying health disparities and AI applications to the field. I recently graduated from the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine at Caguas, Puerto Rico where I obtained my Doctor in Medicine Degree. I am thrilled to embark on multiple projects during these two years that involve understanding barriers to care and their impact on surgical outcomes in colorectal patients, as well as building education programs for the IBD population. I am very passionate about addressing health disparities and improving access to care, thus working with Dr. Chu’s team will be a privilege and an amazing opportunity for my career. I really enjoy, spending time with my friends and family, playing sudoku, trying new coffee shops, having a good glass of Rioja, and traveling to new places!
