Andrew Fellowship

Andrew Burns was accepted for The St. Jude pediatric oncology education (POE) fellowship for the summer of 2022. The program is a funded by the NIH/NCI and focuses on educating students about pediatric oncology and careers in cancer research. Students will write a paper in the form of a manuscript and do a presentation based on their research at the end of the 11-week program.

Ameer Mansur has accepted a summer internship position with MIM Software Inc. in Algorithms Research and Development in Beachwood, OH. Interns will be responsible for providing significant progress to MIM’s research and engineering teams by developing novel algorithms for medical imaging.

Carlos Gallegos has been granted a Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) (T32). This award supports grants to institutions to develop or enhance research training opportunities for pre and postdoctoral fellows to be trained in cancer research. Grant: ‘Development and Functional Assessment of Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering Therapy‘ and it is under Dr. Jay Zhang and Dr. Jack Rogers from Biomedical Engineering.
Yun Lu Travel Award/AACR Abstract

Yun Lu has been granted an AACR Scholar-in-Training Award. These awards are highly competitive and recognize outstanding young investigators presenting meritorious proffered papers at the AACR Annual Meeting. Scholar-in-Training Award funds are to support attendance at the Annual Meeting. Yun Lu’s abstract was accepted. Abstract 2482: Evaluating immune checkpoint blockade treatment efficacy via [89Zr]-CD4 and [89Zr]-CD8 PET imaging in breast cancer mouse models.
Tiara Scholar Award

Tiara Napier has been selected as a Scientist Mentoring & Development Program (SMDP) Biotech Scholar. The SMDP mentoring program brings together diverse students and early career researchers for a professional development training experience. SMDP Biotech Scholars are paired with mentors from biotechnology and consumer healthcare. Each Scholar/Mentor team will be provided the opportunity to attend The BIO International Convention. They work together for one year after the training session to carry out a personalized professional mentoring plan.

Anna Sorace, Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Radiology, and her student in cancer biology, Tiara Napier, Ph.D., received an HHMI Gilliam Award. This award will support Napier during her Ph.D. research. Napier’s research project focuses on Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging to identify early predictive biomarkers of response to immunotherapy and chemotherapy in triple negative breast cancer by noninvasively quantifying hypoxia (FMISO-PET) imaging and activated T-cells with Granzyme B (GZP) PET imaging.
