IN ITS FIRST TWO WAVES, the Puerto Rican Elderly: Health Conditions (PREHCO) project provided quality data for researchers and public policy makers on issues that affect the population of older adults in Puerto Rico: health status, housing arrangements, functional status, work history, migration, income, childhood characteristics, medical insurance, and use of health services. These first two waves were funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) through a collaborative agreement between the Center for Demography and Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Puerto Rico.

The project is currently in its third wave, sponsored by the National Institute on Aging through a collaboration between the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus.
