A number of us attended the annual meeting of the United States Association for the Study of Pain in Seattle, WA. We presented the following posters:

Andrea Thomas – Role of Neighborhood Disadvantage and Adverse Childhood Experiences on Conditioned Pain Modulation in a Chronic Low Back Pain Sample

Asia Wiggins – The Impact of Sociodemographic Factors on Pain Resilience among Adults with chronic low back pain (cLBP)

Caroline Webb – Associations Between Gender Identity, Depression, and Pain Processing in Cisgender and Transgender Individuals

Paige Van Ditta – Low Carbohydrate Diet Reduces Phantom Pain and Increases Emotional Wellbeing in Amputees

Sammy Stocking – Influence of Gender Identity on the Modulation of Painful Stimuli for Cisgender and Transgender Individuals

Stacie Totsch – Therapeutic Potential of a Plant-Based Diet in Reducing Pain and Tumor Growth

It was a great showing overall and Sammy Stocking won the award for Best Poster Presentation in Clinical Science! Way to go Sammy!

Sunil Suresh won FIRST PLACE at the UAB Fall Undergraduate Research Expo for his poster on changes in pain and depression following a 6-week low-carb diet in amputees. Way to go Sunil!

May 2023

Andrea Thomas successfully defended her Master’s thesis in the Medical and Clinical Psychology program. Her thesis was titled “Adverse childhood experiences and chronic low back pain in adulthood: Roles of emotion regulation and socioeconomic status”. Congrats Andrea!

April 2023

Dr. Stacie Totsch was awarded the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation pilot grant to study “Therapeutic effects of an anti-inflammatory diet on pain and tumor growth in a mouse model of ovarian cancer”. Way to go Stacie!
