Kevin Schrum, Ph.D.
Dr. Kevin Schrum has worked in the highway safety field since 2008. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, receiving two graduate degrees while serving as a graduate research assistant at Midwest Roadside Safety Facility (MwRSF). He has published 22 journal papers and technical reports in the field of highway safety engineering and approximately 60 reports related to the analysis of particular crashes. He has collected and analyzed crash data to create a design guide, to conduct cost-benefit analyses, and to investigate the field performance of highway safety devices. Similarly, he has collected and analyzed football player speeds and body orientations during concussive collisions. Using that data, Schrum and his team were able to recreate on-field collisions in a lab using instrumented Anthropomorphic Test Devices or “dummies”. With these devices, linear and rotational accelerations in the head were measured and used to calibrate a computer model using a non-linear, explicit finite element code known as LS-Dyna. He has managed and conducted crash testing at UAB’s BLASER laboratory using vehicle speeds in excess of 70 mph. At the same facility, he oversees the indoor test lab, which includes a track and sled device that were custom-built for analyzing recreational sports safety equipment, including football, hockey, and equestrian helmets.
