For the past 30 years, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine has been at the forefront of HIV clinical trials research. Throughout our history, we have contributed to the field of HIV research and gained valuable experience in efficiently conducting clinical trials for four NIH/NIAID-sponsored HIV networks. This success has been achieved by leveraging the UAB Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Administrative Core to provide the primary infrastructure for coordination of ongoing research efforts at the Alabama clinical research site. In 2015, the Matero clinical research site at the Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) located in Lusaka, Zambia was added to the Clinical Trials Unit at UAB. The Matero clinical research site has successfully performed numerous NIAID-sponsored network trials in Zambia. The addition of the Matero clinical research expands the capabilities of the recently funded Alabama to Zambia Clinical Trials Unit (November 2020 press release) setting the stage for the next seven years of science-driven HIV clinical research at UAB.
