Graduate Program
The Neuroengineering PhD Program is a joint program between the UAB Schools of Engineering and Medicine.
It is a first-of-its kind program in the state of Alabama and one of the only freestanding neuroengineering doctoral programs in the country. It started in the fall of 2020.

By combining faculty expertise in neurobiology, neuroscience, engineering and the sciences this program is training a new generation of neuroengineers to advance understanding of neurodegenerative disorders and other brain diseases and develop novel therapeutics, neuroprosthetics and tools to restore lost brain function and improve patient outcomes.
In 2020 the UAB Neuroengineering PhD program welcomed students who transferred from other doctoral programs. The first full cohort of incoming PhD students started in fall 2021, and the second cohort started in fall 2022. We are currently recruiting students for the next cohort to start in fall 2023.
Neuroengineering Journal Club
The Neuroengineering PhD Program offers a Neuroengineering Journal Club that is open to all who are interested. Students can take the journal club as a class (IDNE 790). Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and others are welcome to participate. The journal club meets weekly to discuss papers related to neuroengineering and brain computer interface. Contact Dr. Mark Bolding (bolding@uab.edu) for more information.
