Arend Lab Research Team
Position: Lab Director I’m originally from Chicago, IL and received my B.S. in Genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2006 as a POSSE scholar. Completed my Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Pathology at UAB in 2013 as a Howard Hughes Med-to-Grad Fellow followed by my Postdoctoral training in Cancer Genomics at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. After my postdoctoral training, I joined the Personalized Medicine Initiative in Women’s Cancers at UAB. I volunteered at an international level as a junior counsel board member for both the American Association for Cancer Research and the Metastasis Research Society. My goal is to merge my training in cancer genetics and precision medicine oncology. Position: Postdoctoral Scholar GCS Foundation Background: I grew up in a rural Georgia town near the South Carolina boarder. During my childhood, I spent my summers fishing in creeks and going to my family’s coastal home in Beaufort, South Carolina. I developed a love for softball and tennis during middle and high school, and played tennis in college. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Georgia College and State University, Master of Arts in Biology from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and Doctor of Philosophy in Cell and Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from the Medical University of South Carolina. When I am not working, my husband and I love to be outdoors hunting and fishing, listening to good music, eating good food, and spending time with our friends and golden retriever, Miller! Position: Graduate Student (CANB theme) Interests/Hobbies: Family & Friends time, traveling, baking, music, Latino dancing I am spending time here in the Arend lab as a clinical research assistant in between undergraduate and medical school. My duties retrieving research samples from the operating room and Gyn Onc clinic, organizing our tumor bank, writing personalize medicine letters for Gyn Onc patients based on their tumor NGS results, screening all Gyn Onc patients for our open clinical trials, as well as assist Dr. Arend in the process of opening up new clinical trials here at UAB. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my friends outdoors by hiking and going to the local farmer’s market, as well as finding ways to be creative. Particularly, I like to come up with new recipes in baking, find new designs to embroider, and try my hand in calligraphy and watercolor.
