UAB AMERICORPS PROGRAM

The power of AmeriCorps VISTA is extraordinary, bringing talented, passionate people together to create and enhance anti-poverty programs. Since 2014, VISTAs have served through the University of Alabama at Birmingham providing capacity building to community agencies. Each year our program’s goals have continuously been met and often exceeded as the capacity and vision of our program continue to grow and flourish. In 2014, our program managed five VISTAs out of the UAB Office of Service-Learning and Undergraduate Research. At full capacity in 2022, our program will host 90 VISTAs and Summer Associates simultaneously at over fifteen sites in twelve counties. In 2021 in the Black Belt region of Alabama, we placed over 20 members in four counties (Wilcox, Dallas, Perry, and Marengo) and will expand to four more counties in 2022. During the COVID-19 pandemic, VISTAs served as connectors to resources as well as completing original projects focusing on food security, public health, the opioid epidemic, environmental sustainability, and education.
