Manuel Rosa-Garrido
Principal Investigator
Manuel received his Ph.D. from the University of Cantabria (Spain) under the supervision of Dr. Delgado Villar for his work studying the role that the epigenetic factor CTCF plays in controlling cancer progression. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked in the lab of Dr. Thomas Vondriska at UCLA, where he pioneered the use of high-resolution chromatin conformation capture technology to study how chromatin structure is altered during cardiac disease. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at UAB, where he leads his own research program focused on developing epigenetic treatment approaches to heart failure.

Xiaoxiao Geng
Graduate Student
Xiaoxiao is a graduate trainee in the BME program. Her research focuses on cellular therapy for myocardial infarction and epigenetic regulation in cardiovascular disease. Outside the lab, she likes cooking, playing the ukulele, and hiking.

Armaan Verma
Graduate Student
Armaan Verma is a Biomedical Engineering PhD student. She holds a Master’s in Biomedical Innovation and Development in BME from Georgia Tech and a Bachelor’s in Biology from Mercer University. Armaan’s goal is to combine her passion for technology and healthcare to make a meaningful impact in improving patient care through cutting-edge medical research and innovations. Outside of research, she enjoys badminton, reading, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Larry Byers

Larry is currently an undergraduate student, whose love for math and science led him to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in chemistry. His love for science and passion to leave a positive impact on people has led Larry to pursue a career in healthcare. After graduating Larry plans to attend medical school. Through research Larry plans to versatility in other fields as a student and learn more about the kind of research that leads to innovation in the medical field.

Jose Ramirez Guerrero
Undergraduate Student
Jose is an international student from Panama. He is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. Jose serves as a student assistant and international mentor at INTO UAB to guide and help the international community at UAB. He is passionate about bioinformatics and developing new therapies and devices to help cardiac disease patients. Jose likes to work out in the gym, play basketball and soccer, watch TV shows, and spend some time relaxing in his free time.

Avantika Reddy is a sophomore at the University of Alabama at Birmingham majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in computer science. Her interest in Biomedical Engineering stems from her fascination with the design and creation of technology associated with the clinical aspect of cardiac medicine.
