A Framework for Transformative Practices & Principles in Academic Spaces

Research shows that many graduate students experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, and that a significant number leave their programs before completing their degrees. Long-standing structural, cultural, and financial challenges within academia contribute to these outcomes, affecting not only individual well-being but also the quality of research and connections between universities and the broader community. In response, WeMerge scholars developed a framework to support well-being in academic research and culture. The framework is organized around four guiding principles: 1. Cultivate Belonging 2. Center Communities 3. Question Cultural Systems 4. Embody Cultural Change (see figure below).
