During our trip, we will visit Pilanesberg National Park – the fourth largest park in South Africa. It is located between the dryness of the Kalahari and the wet Lowveld vegetation so we should see a wide variety of animals, flora and fauna. We are told many of those are not often found living side by side.
The park is basically set inside the crater of an ancient volcano. Seriously ancient – formed 1.2 billion years ago! It is not only a unique geological space created by volcanic eruptions some 1,300 million years ago, but it is also one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world.
Pilanesberg National Park is 550 square kilometers – or as we say back home – 212 square miles. Here are some highlights we found from the Pilanesberg Park website:
- 7,000 animals
- 360 bird species
- Home to the “Big 5” animals of South Africa, the elephant, leopard, lion, rhinoceros, African buffalo, and many more animal species
- Countless insects!!!
