What is the Newborn Follow-up Clinic?

The Newborn Follow-up Clinic was created to evaluate the most at-risk premature infants. Clients come from local NICUs for appointments during their first three years of life. This clinic has an array of team members to make it easier for families to access everything they need. The team will ensure each family has the appropriate resources and services to meet their child’s needs. For more information, please visit the clinic’s website.

How Does the Clinic Fit in With This Project?

An occupational therapy student teamed up with the clinic for this research project. The student worked with the clinic team to find parents interested in participating in this project. In addition to that, we interviewed interested parents outside of the clinic to expand the study. The Newborn Follow-Up Clinic played a critical role in this project, providing resources and essential knowledge to support the creation of this site.

Getting To Know the Interdisciplinary Team

Pediatrician

A pediatrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of infants and children. They provide guidance and support to parents and caregivers. At the Newborn Follow-up clinic, this team member will perform various exams, prescribe medication as needed, and discuss any medical concerns with the family.

Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist

These team members are trained therapists who work with infants and children. They will evaluate the movement of the muscles in the body. This includes big movements like walking or crawling and little movements like grabbing a block.

Nutritionist

The nutritionist will give guidance and recommendations on food. This team member makes sure the child’s nutritional needs are met. The nutritionist may also recommend foods fitting to the child’s age.

Psychologist

The clinic psychologist looks at the child’s well-being. They will help families navigate through the challenges of childhood. The psychologist will have the child complete various assessments and make recommendations as needed.

Audiologist

An audiologist is trained to diagnosis and treat hearing and balance issues. This team member will complete hearing and balance tests with your child and make recommendations as needed. Identifying any issues early on is essential for a child’s success.

Optometrist

An optometrist will look at any vision or eye related problems. This team member will test your child’s vision and may prescribe glasses if appropriate.

Pediatric Nurse

This team member is trained to address the various needs of children. The nurse will update a child’s medical history and other new information at the clinic. They are also responsible for getting weight, height, and additional measurements. After each visit, the nurse will communicate with the family with a summary of findings and a follow-up plan.
