Joining The Lab

The lab is oriented in clinical psychology. Those interested in careers in clinical psychology are especially encouraged to apply. To formally join the lab you can apply to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical/Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. UAB also has excellent graduate training programs in Behavioral Neuroscience and Developmental Psychology. Students interested in research careers in neuroscience/developmental psychology are also encouraged to apply. We also supervise UAB undergraduates interested in pursuing careers in psychology/medicine via the PY 398 Research Practicum. For all applicants, but especially graduate students, make sure you consider yourself a “good fit” before applying. To be a good fit as a clinical psychologist, you should be interested in clinical practice AND research. If you are applying for a career in neuroscience or developmental psychology you should be aiming for a rigorous research career. In your application statement be sure to articulate a detailed interest in at least one of the following areas:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Third-Wave Behavioral Mental Health Interventions

Common Factors and/or Process-Based Therapy Research

Evaluating Treatment Efficacy (Psychotherapy, Medication, Cutting Edge Interventions)

Meta-Analysis, Particularly Of Existing Interventions

LGBTQ+ Mental Health Disparities

Compulsive Sexual Behavior

Problematic Pornography Viewing

Being a Ph.D. student is roughly a five-to-six year commitment (including the mandatory 1-year pre-doctoral clinical internship for those pursuing medical/clinical PhDs). Funding is provided via RA, TA, and/or Fellowship to admitted students in good standing. Funding is among the best in the United States.

We anticipate recruiting one new Ph.D. student for the fall 2025 start date.

Applicants are also strongly encouraged to seek and obtain extramural funding to build their research programs. We encourage application to the NSF GRFP program prior to UAB application https://www.nsfgrfp.org/. Admitted students are also expected to submit a proposal to the NIH F31 program.
