Education and Training Opportunities

Education & Training

Opportunities

Although health disparities are especially dramatic in the Deep South, UAB is one of only a few academic institutions training researchers, clinicians, and practitioners about how sexual orientation and gender identity affect health. We offer several education and training opportunities to UAB students as well as the broader community.

Certificate Programs

The LGBTQ Health and Wellbeing Certificate Programs provide advanced education to undergraduate and graduate students at UAB seeking to enhance their LGBTQ-related research skills. These programs integrate content across a range of disciplines (e.g., education, medicine, social sciences, public health) to prepare students and future professionals to have an immediate impact on LGBTQ disparities in the Deep South and across the nation. Students may choose from several online or classroom-based courses to meet the requirements for these programs. All students will participate in a service-learning in-person course led by UAB faculty and staff from Birmingham AIDS Outreach.

Community Training Program

The UAB GenderS Program is a comprehensive training initiative, funded by an NIH Research Education Program (R25), designed to develop the personal and professional skills of post-baccalaureate students and community members to address LGBTQ health. Developed in collaboration with our community partner, Birmingham AIDS Outreach, this program includes a 14-week online course, a 1-week residency in Birmingham, Alabama, and monthly networking salons with designated faculty to collaborate and share ideas. Additionally, program scholars are paired with a faculty mentor to develop a training plan in alignment with core curricula and individual goals.

Predoctoral Training

Our full-time, multidisciplinary mentored training program supports predoctoral trainees in the development of exceptional research and community engagement skills to advance LGBTQ health in the Deep South. Anchored by a new training award (T32) from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, this training program provides tuition and health insurance, a stipend, and travel funds. The planned duration of appointments is two years, beginning January 2025.

Community Events

In addition to our education and training programs, we sponsor both academic and social events to provide additional training and celebrate the resilience of LGBTQ communities. These events are open to the broader community.
