Community Building

Building a Stronger Community

Our Goal

UAB’s proud history of partnership with Alabama’s LGBTQ communities is the foundation of the Center for the Study of Sexual and Gender Health. By meaningfully engaging with and empowering LGBTQ community members locally and nationally, including collaborations with established and well-respected service organizations, the Center is building the local expertise needed to navigate the complex and evolving landscape of research and programs in the region. We also sponsor academic and social events to connect people and expand personal and professional networks across the South.

Current Collaborations

We are working with AIDS Alabama to create a community-academic partnership that engages stakeholders to develop hyper-local, place-based outreach strategies to increase the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among racially/ethnically diverse LGBTQ communities.

We are working with Birmingham AIDS Outreach to develop a harm reduction intervention for people engaging in sex work in Alabama. This project is grounded in syndemics theory and implementation science frameworks to directly address the needs of an underserved population through our community-academic partnership.

We are working with Five Horizons Health Services to explore social connectedness among Black gay and bisexual men aged 40 and older, looking at difference between California and Alabama through a personal social network approach to inform the creation of an intervention addressing loneliness and social isolation.
