Center for the Study of
Sexual and Gender Health
Who Are We?
The Center for the Study of Sexual and Gender Health is a multidisciplinary coalition of academic and community partners committed to improving the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ people locally, regionally, and nationally. Together, we are conducting innovative research, providing education & training opportunities, and building a stronger community.
Innovative Research
LGBTQ individuals – designated in 2016 by NIH as a health disparity population – face dramatic health disparities. Although the South is home to the country’s largest LGBTQ population, regional progress towards addressing these disparities remains tenuous. In the Deep South, academics and community partners must navigate one of the most complex environments in the country. This challenge amplifies the value of our research.
Education & Training
Although health disparities are especially dramatic in the Deep South, UAB is one of only a few academic institutions focused on training individuals about how sexual orientation and gender identity affect health. We are investing in the next generation of researchers, clinicians, and practitioners by offering several LGBTQ education and training opportunities to UAB students and the broader community.
Community Building
By meaningfully engaging with and empowering LGBTQ community members, including collaborations with established and well-respected service organizations, we are building the local expertise needed to navigate the complex and evolving landscape of research and programs in the region.
