Welcome to the UAB Hospital Medicine Quality and Administrative Fellowship!

Thank you for your interest in the Quality and Administrative Fellowship at UAB. We are excited to introduce this new two year fellowship, starting July 2022.  Our mission is to prepare Internal Medical trained physicians for leadership positions in quality and administration. In addition to obtaining a Master’s degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety or Health Administration, the curriculum affords the fellow the opportunity to develop and maintain excellent clinical and procedural skills, have real world quality and patient safety training, complete a personalized leadership plan, and spend time within the administrative and executive offices learning about organizational missions and projects. The learning environment at this academic institution is rich with institutional leaders and faculty mentors that will help ensure success during your fellowship and as an emerging leader and innovator going forward.

Your fellowship will be structured to provide ongoing direct patient care while completing the fellowship curriculum.  The bulk of your training will occur in your non-clinical time.  In addition to the Master’s course work in which you will learn the fundamentals of healthcare quality, patient safety, leadership, communication, and finance, you will also spend a large amount of time learning how to effectively translate these concepts and skills into tangible, meaningful, institutional change.  To accomplish this, you will partner with our outstanding leadership in Clinical Practice Transformation where you will focus on team management skills, critical thinking, process improvement and strategic thinking as you implement institutional quality projects.  The fellowship will be tailored to your individual goals and interest.  Clinically, you will serve as a 50% hospitalist at a busy academic institution with exposure to a wide array of diagnoses.  You will have the opportunity to work on our collaborative care, geriatrics, consult, and step-down units with the option to obtain US and procedure training if so desired.

I am excited for the potential opportunity to work with you and help you achieve your career goals. I think you will find the experiences and mentoring available at UAB to be key to your success.

Should you have any additional questions about the fellowship, please do not hesitate to contact me @ aelam@uabmc.edu.

Best,
