Dr. Jayleen Grams joined the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2009. A native of Minnesota, Grams received her undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University and matriculated into the Medical Scientist Training Program at the UAB. Here, she completed her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology and her M.D. in 2003. She returned to Minnesota to complete a general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, N.Y. Dr. Grams’ clinical practice focuses on foregut and bariatric surgery. She is also involved in an active research program as a surgeon-scientist and the education of medical students, surgery residents, and minimally invasive surgery fellows. She serves as the assistant MIS fellowship director.

Aidi Niu joined Dr. Grams’s lab in 2015 as a visiting scholar. She completed her D.M.D/Ph.D. program at Sichuan University, China in 2017. Her research interests include the function of osteocalcin in bone and metabolism and the impact of Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery on the skeleton.
