In addition to performing diagnostic testing for patient care, the UAB Fungal Reference Laboratory serves as a testing center for industry and government sponsored in vitro and clinical studies involving the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of infectious diseases in children and adults. Persons or organizations interested in having our laboratory perform BSL-2 or BSL-3 microbial culture, drug susceptibility testing, antigen testing, serology, molecular identification and quantification, sequencing, histopathology consultation, digital slide scanning, and leukocyte activation assays for investigational purposes should contact the FRL Medical Director, Sixto M. Leal Jr. As the Director of UAB’s BSL-3 Research Facility, SEBLAB, with an active experimental research program, Dr. Leal’s research also extends to pre-clinical models enabling the evaluation of novel antimicrobials and vaccines against a variety of microbes and emerging pathogens.
