The Scott research lab actively collaborates with other schools and departments across UAB as well as external entities both nationally and internationally. Since 2022, 4 intramural grants have been secured, facilitating a strong group of researchers including graduate & undergraduate students as well as pathology residents who have produced 5 publications and 15 published abstracts for local and national meetings. In recognition of the level of research, in 2024, MSFS student Kerry Murr was the recipient of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT) Educational Research Award (ERA) for her research on “Comparison of Ketone Levels Using a Commercial Ketone Monitoring System to Screen for Beta-hydroxybutyrate Prior to GC-MS Analysis”. The Scott research lab focuses on drug stability in authentic biological matrices and the use of alternative matrices in toxicological analyses. In additional, due to a strong partnership with the Medical Examiner’s Office, interns and researcher’s are able to data mine and focus on solutions to interpretive hypotheses using large datasets. Graduates in the MSFS program can elect to conduct Forensic Toxicology research for their major research project in the spring of their 1st year of the program. Past research and thesis projects are listed here.
