Welcome to Dr. Fonseca’s Lab
Annabelle L. Fonseca, MD, MHS is an NIH-funded surgeon-scientist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a surgical oncologist with a clinical focus on hepatopancreatobiliary and other foregut cancers. Dr. Fonseca’s lab is committed to identifying, understanding, and reducing health disparities in access to care among patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.
Our lab is focused on identifying the modifiable barriers that prevent patients from receiving high-quality, timely, and guideline-concordant treatment for GI cancers, in particular foregut cancers. By investigating modifiable factors, we plan to develop targeted strategies that will improve access to high-quality cancer care for all patients, regardless of their background.
Our lab is deeply committed to training and mentoring the next generation of surgeons, physician-scientists, and researchers. Since its inception, we have provided mentorship to many trainees, including residents, medical school students, graduate students, and high school students. We are dedicated to fostering a rich learning experience that equips our trainees with the skills and knowledge needed to drive meaningful change in healthcare.
