Study for Adolescents with Epilepsy Diagnosis

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is recruiting adolescent participants with an epilepsy diagnosis for a clinical research study. The study will compare adolescents with epilepsy and adolescents with functional seizures. If you and your child choose to participate in the study, you will be part of the epilepsy group. The adolescent can be compensated $50.
Your child may qualify if they:
- Are between the ages of 11-18 years old.
- Have no diagnosed functional seizures.
- Have a parent/guardian available to participate in a lab visit.
- Have experienced at least 2 seizures in the last month.
Participants will complete a lab visit at UAB. The lab visit will last about 2 hours. During the visit, the adolescent’s parent/guardian will complete a series of questionnaires, and your child will complete questionnaires, computer tasks, and place their hand in cool water for as long as they can, but no longer than 3 minutes. Your child will also be asked to wear a small Actiwatch that monitors sleep activity. Parent/guardian will have a choice to complete the visits over a HIPAA-compliant Zoom call before the child’s in-person lab visits.
There is no cost to participate in this clinical research study. Qualified participants who complete the clinical research study will be compensated $50.
