Dr. De Miguel gave a talk about her career journey at the Career Insight seminar series at the Ohio State University, organized by the Research Commons and Dr. Katelyn Dunigan-Russell.


Dr. De Miguel was awarded a microgrant from the UAB DRIVEN program (Driving Research: An Interdisciplinary, Vibrant, Engaged Network). The microgrant is for one year.


Dr. De Miguel and the lab were awarded one of the 2024 LAUNCHED program pilot and feasibility grants. The grant is for 1 year and will investigate the role of the immune ET-1/ETA axis in the kidney disease associated with obesity.

December 2023

Abby Brooks, 2nd year PhD student in the lab, was awarded 2 fellowships! The first one was an American Heart Association predoctoral fellowship (6 percentile!!).

The second one was a a predoctoral fellowship position on the Deep South KUH Premier Research PRIME TL1.

Way to go Abby! We are so very proud of you!!

It is the beginning of the summer and this only means one thing: summer students are here!! Yay! We are so happy to welcome Gabriel, Brian and María to the lab this summer! Gabriel is part of the UAB CORD program, María is part of the KURE program and Brian is a UAB/UCSD O’Brien Scholar this summer. Will will also be in the lab sporadically. María, Sharrell and Mingmar present their research at the 2021 ABRCMS conference! Maria was selected for a lightning talk, and Mingmar and Sharrell presented posters. Sharrell won one of the best posters in the Physiology and Pharmacology section, and María received a Lightning Talk award during the conference! So proud of all of you!


Dr. De Miguel is invited to give a seminar in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Microbiology at LaTrobe University, Australia. She presented the talk “Inflammatory and cell death pathways in diabetic kidney disease: the role of Endothelin-1”. Thank you so much for the invitation!


Welcome Risa to the lab! Risa Kiernan is a visiting 3rd year medical student scholar from the New York Institute of Technology that is visiting our lab for one week. This is part of our collaborative project with Dr. Maria Alicia Carrillo Sepulveda at that institution.


Dr. De Miguel participates as a panelist in the Basic Research Forum for Emerging Scientists during the ASN Kidney week to talk about strategies to expand your network starting when you are a trainee.


Dr. De Miguel is invited by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University to give a seminar on how to use social media to promote your science career.

Dr. De Miguel gives a seminar at Foundation for Biomedical Investigation i+12/ Instituto de Investigación Biomédica Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Madrid, Spain. The title of her talk was “To tweet or not to tweet: Las redes sociales y la Ciencia moderna”.


Brian is selected to present a talk at the Academic Conference for Emerging Scholars (BioAcCES) organized by Rockefeller University and Cientifico Latino.


Dr. De Miguel presents a poster at the APS New Trends in Sex and Gender Medicine Conference and wins award as best poster by junior faculty and a diversity conference scholarship.


Patrick Molina presents a poster at the 17th International Endothelin Conference on our collaborative project with the J. Pollock lab and he wins best trainee poster and a Martin Franklin Diversity Conference award! Well done, Patrick!

Welcome to our remote summer undergraduate students María and Mary! María is a freshman at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras campus and Mary is a junior at the University of Southern California. They both are part of the Virtual Summer of Research Program of the American Physician Scientist Association.


Welcome to our summer undergraduate students Annalisse, Brian and Gabriel! Gabriel is part of the UAB CORD Blazing to Biomedical Careers summer program and Brian and Annalisse are UAB KURE summer scholars. We are so happy to have you joining our team this summer and we hope that you enjoy your projects!


Congratulations Abbie for being awarded an AΩA 2021 Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship!! She will continue her research on the effects of hyperoxia on the kidney endothelin-1 system.


Congratulations Will for being selected to participate in the NIDDK dkNET Summer of Data Internship Program! He will keep researching the interplay between endothelin-1, autophagy and apoptosis during diabetic kidney disease.

Vianna will be joining the Pathology Graduate Program at Duke University and Rawan will join the Graduate Program in Integrative Biology and Physiology at the University of Minnesota. Sharrell was selected as the UAB Animal Resources Program (ARP) employee of the year and the quarter!!! Way to go, Sharrell! As part of this award, Sharrell will be presenting part of her lab research project at the ALAAS National Conference in October 2021. We are so proud of you!


Dr. De Miguel kicked off the Kidney Club high school outreach program of the Division of Nephrology by virtually visiting Booker T. Washington High School in Birmingham to talk to the students about kidney physiology and her work in the lab.
