The Wells Lab focuses primarily on pre-clinical models of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COPD-associated pulmonary vascular disease, as well as translational and clinical studies in chronic lung disease, with an emphasis in COPD, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, and COPD-associated vasculopathy.

We combine comprehensive physiologic methods to characterize the pulmonary vasculature through closed-chest right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) measures and lung function via FlexiVent with histology and molecular biological techniques to interrogate the underlying mechanisms that contribute to cardiopulmonary disease pathogenesis. The Wells Lab also provides molecular service support for UAB Heersink School of Medicine Lung Health Center studies.
