Micah Simmons, M.S., Scientist II
Micah graduated from Auburn University (WAR EAGLE) with a master’s degree in Fishery Sciences. He began his career at the USDA Aquatic Animal Health Research Laboratory. While at the USDA he studied bacteriological, parasitological, nutritional and immunological problems in aquaculture. He continued his career in research at UAB in the School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. In the Department of Epidemiology he worked on the PAARTNERS project and studied Alzheimer’s using genetic linkage and SNP genotyping. He transitioned to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology to work on various molecular and cellular neuroscience experiments using postmortem human brain to help understand the etiology of schizophrenia. Micah then took a scientist position in the Cowell lab at Southern Research’s neuroscience drug discovery division. In this role he helped further understand the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s and identify potential new drug targets for treatments and serves as the Cowell Lab manager. When the Cowell lab moved to the department of Neurology at UAB he became the guru of all things cellular, molecular, and neural. He has a strong passion for training the next generation of scientists. In his free time, he takes care of his farm and family and competes in local 5K, 10K, and half marathon runs (and encourages everyone to do the same).
