JANUARY 2025: COWELL LAB PUBLICATION – A recent article published by the Cowell lab has determined that the transcription factor Estrogen-related receptor gamma (ERRg) can drive the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial and lysosomal function. However, while overexpression of ERRg can increase expression of these genes, it concurrently downregulates genes important for the normal function of neurons. These data, coupled with evidence for an increase in ERRg in tissue from rodent models of Huntington Disease, indicate that ERRg may mediate a neuronal stress response in disease and that further studies are needed to understand ERRg biology so that its beneficial actions can be promoted in the context of disease.
AUGUST 2024: GRANT FROM MJFF FOR SUBCONTRACT WITH INFLAMMANOVA RX
AUGUST 2024: GRANT FROM MJFF FOR SUBCONTRACT WITH INFLAMMANOVA RX – The Cowell Lab was awarded a subcontract as part of a larger award to InflammaNova RX from the Michael J. Fox Foundation entitled “Therapeutic Development of Novel STING Inhibitors to Treat Parkinson’s Disease Neuroinflammation.” This study will use a variety of methods to determine whether novel inhibitors of STING show evidence for target engagement in rodent models of inflammation and Parkinson’s Disease.
