JANUARY 2025: COWELL LAB PUBLICATIONA recent article published by the Cowell lab has determined that the transcription factor Estrogen-related receptor gamma (ERRg) can drive the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial and lysosomal function. However, while overexpression of ERRg can increase expression of these genes, it concurrently downregulates genes important for the normal function of neurons. These data, coupled with evidence for an increase in ERRg in tissue from rodent models of Huntington Disease, indicate that ERRg may mediate a neuronal stress response in disease and that further studies are needed to understand ERRg biology so that its beneficial actions can be promoted in the context of disease.
