UCEM & CSCH Joint Pilot Grant

UAB Center for Exercise Medicine and Center for the Study of Community Health
2023 Joint Pilot Grant
REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

The UAB Center for Exercise Medicine (UCEM) and the Center for the Study of Community Health (CSCH) are pleased to announce a joint RFA to fund pilot research that focuses on the intersection of exercise and community-based research. We anticipate funding projects that expand the scope of the applicant to include research relevant to these specific areas. Only proposals with a clear focus on the community will be considered. Funds should be used to generate key preliminary data to develop publications and contribute to an application for extramural funding. Funding that continues ongoing projects will not be considered.

Interdisciplinary projects focused on community-based participatory research to address issues connected to promoting exercise and physical activity participation in the community, especially social determinants of health are welcome. Projects that are responsive to upcoming/issued RFA or Program Announcements from NIH will be deemed highly responsive. Applications from PIs from multiple schools and/or that establish new collaborations are also encouraged.

If funded, the proposed start date of the pilot grant will be October 1, 2023. Budgets should be for one year and should not exceed $40,000. We anticipate potentially supporting 2 projects; however funds will be awarded based on the merit of the applications. Awards are not renewable. Awardees will be encouraged to present their findings at campus and local research symposia and national scientific conferences.

ELIGIBILITY AND EXPECTATIONS

  1. Open to all full-time UAB faculty members at the Instructor rank or above. Junior faculty are encouraged to apply.
  2. Projects should focus on the promotion of exercise and/or physical activity in the community (e.g., under served populations of Alabama, school systems, rural communities, etc.)
  3. Multi-investigator, team-based proposals – with emphasis on new collaborations – are encouraged.
  4. Applications that are extensions of currently funded research will not be considered. A statement describing BOTH how this application differs from currently funded projects AND how it benefits the targeted community is required.
  5. IRB protocol submission prior to the funding start date is required (if applicable).
  6. Selected pilot projects are expected to lead to the submission of an extramural NIH or equivalent grant application within 12 months of pilot project expiration.
