Additive Manufacturing of Compositionally Complex Systems (CCSs)
We employ two metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques, i.e., laser powder-bed-fusion (L-PBF) and laser-engineered net shaping (LENS), to fabricate CCSs with tailored microstructures and properties for our theoretical and experimental studies. The different printing conditions by the EOS M290 L-PBF and Optomec 450 LENS systems at UMass Amherst enable printing at drastically different cooling rates of 105-107 K/s and 103-105 K/s, respectively. Specifically, we will focus on families of advanced CCSs that exhibit unique microstructures and exceptional mechanical properties for extreme environment applications: eutectic high-entropy alloys and bulk metallic glass composites.
