Summer Workshops
The CAMCSE Team facilitates and records workshops for our trainees. The focus of the workshops is as follows:
- Additive Manufacturing
- Machine Learning in Materials Science
- Static and Dynamic Compressions Materials
- Measurements and Modeling of Mechanical Behavior under Varying Strain Rates
Intro to Additive Manufacturing
Presented by Dr. Wen Chen, Assistant Professor, UMass
This workshop is an introduction to additive manufacturing and how this technology can be used for 3D printing of emerging complex alloys. Dr. Wen Chen is a member of the CAMCSE Leadership Team
Static Compression of Materials
presented by Dr. Wenli Bi, Associate Professor of Physics
This video introduces the static compression technique using diamond anvil cells and several basic materials characterization methods including electrical transport, AC susceptibility, and synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques.
Ultrahigh-rate Mechanical Characterization via Laser-induced Projectile Impact Test (LIPIT)
presented by Dr. Jae-Hwang Lee, Associate Professor of mechnical and industrial engineering
This workshop lecture introduces the laser-induced projectile impact test (LIPIT) method for microscopic high-strain-rate mechanical characterization with a brief background, its working principle, and examples of its application cases.
First Principles and Machine Learning Methods in Materials Modeling and Discovery
presented by Dr. Cheng-chien chen, Associate Professor physics
This video introduces first-principles calculations and machine learning simulations on ternary superhard materials and high-entropy ceramics with superior mechanical properties.
