Current Research
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a neutrophil-mediated chronic inflammation of the lung. The goal of Dr. Bell’s Laboratory is to discover the mechanisms of neutrophil recruitment and disease advancement to facilitate the development of treatments for CF patients.
Our current research areas focus on microbial colonization and clearance in CF airways; the effect of CF-related diabetes symptoms (hyperglycemia, insulin resistance) on the observed chronic inflammation, and accelerated lung function decline in CF patients. We are also exploring the molecular mechanism behind why women with CF experience a faster decline in lung status compared to male CF patients.
Our other research focus is smoking-related chronic lung injury. We explore how cellular crosstalk occurs between neutrophils and macrophages via extracellular vesicles and how these cell-to-cell interactions affect lung structure.
